Like so many cool hockey things postponed by COVID-19, the annual Coach Sauer Summer Classic High School Hockey Tournament was also impacted. It makes a lot of people happy to see the inaugural Coach Sauer hockey tourney scheduled for this weekend after having to cancel the tourney last year due to the pandemic. Organizers created this event in memory of former Wisconsin Badgers Coach Jeff Sauer and as an important fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting The Coach Sauer Foundation.
Held on Father’s Day weekend, this event brings in both local teams and teams from around Wisconsin. The High School hockey teams participating this year includes; Antigo, Baraboo, DC Everest, Deforest, Janesville, Madison Edgewood (2 teams), Madison West, Milton, Oshkosh, Waukesha North, Wausau West and Verona (2 teams).
Admission is free for everyone and the number of fans is not restricted. Both hockey facilities have decided that the best approach regarding the use of masks is to follow the current CDC and Madison/Dane County Public Health recommendations:
- Anyone who is fully vaccinated (2 weeks after receiving final dose) will not be required to wear a mask inside Hartmeyer Ice Arena or Verona Ice Arena or while participating in on-ice activities.
- People who are NOT fully vaccinated, must continue to wear a mask and follow social distancing recommendations.
The tournament begins Friday June 18th and will wrap up on Sunday June 20th. Games will be played at either Hartmeyer Ice Arena or Verona Ice Arena (see full schedule below).
